Session

A session is one visit to a website. The session starts when a visitor arrives and ends after a period of inactivity. One visitor can generate many sessions.

In AnyTrack, a session starts when a visitor arrives on your site and ends after 30 minutes of inactivity (the default). When the same visitor returns after that inactivity window, AnyTrack starts a new session. For this reason, your session count can be higher than your visitor count.

The Tracking Tag opens the session. The Campaign Report shows the total in the Sessions column. When a visitor moves to a checkout on a different domain without cross-domain tracking, a new session starts.

Sessions also measure your plan usage. Monthly sessions are the total number of sessions from all properties in your account, and each plan includes a session cap. AnyTrack counts sessions, not events: 1 session with 200 events counts as 1 session. See Monthly sessions.

  • Link Click: Link Clicks are the clicks on the ad that the ad platform reports. Sessions are the visits that AnyTrack tracks on your site. The two numbers differ, because some clicks never reach the site.
  • Event: a session is the visit, and events are the actions inside it. One session can contain many events.

Why is my session count higher than my visitor count?
A session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity by default. When the same visitor returns after that window, AnyTrack starts a new session. One visitor can generate many sessions.
Why do Link Clicks and Sessions differ in the Campaign Report?
Link Clicks are the clicks that your ad platform reports. Sessions are the visits that AnyTrack tracks on your site. Some clicks never reach the site, for example because of ad blockers, slow page loads, or destinations that are not a website. To match a session to the campaign row of its Link Clicks, install the UTM template of the ad platform.
What is the difference between a session and a pageview?
A session is one visit to your site. A pageview counts each time a page loads or reloads, even within the same session.
